History: Fredericksburg’s Town Hall and Market Square is one of the rare surviving Federal-period public complexes. The first Town Hall, built around 1763, stood as a center for social events and gradually evolved into a semi-official seat of government after the Revolution. Fredericksburg Lodge even met there for a time! Its successor, completed in 1816, still stands today. Farmers and craftsmen once filled its arcades below, while assemblies, dances, and meetings of the town’s leaders occupied the upper floors. For generations, it served as the beating heart of Fredericksburg’s civic life before being transformed in 1988 into the history museum we know today. It is in this setting, full of memory and meaning, that we shall meet.
